Street Signs in Weston

Weston-super-Mare Street Sign Repainting

The Civic Society has started a project to repaint the old cast signs in Weston

We said

Westonians may have noticed something a bit brighter around the centre of the town. Weston-super-Mare Civic Society has paid for and organised the re-painting of around 40 cast iron street name plates. The first tranche of work has been in the High Street area where there is most foot fall, but the Society hopes to be able to paint more in the future.

The Society believes that these ornate old cast iron signs, originally erected in Victorian times, are a valuable and interesting part of the town’s heritage which needs to be preserved. Clearer, brighter, signs should help to promote pride in Weston and also help people find their way around more easily.
The Project

To identify those cast iron street signs in the centre of Weston-super-Mare that are need of refurbishment.

In October 2019 we identified a number which were completed by a local contractor. We are hoping that more can be done in the future.

The list of signs identified so far, including those repainted, is here in a spreadsheet. There are links to Streetview and to pictures of some of the signs before and after restoration.

'Somerset Traditional Fingerposts - Maintenance, Repair & Restoration Handbook', produced by Somerset County Council is here

The information on pages 40-43 also applies to street signs.
