Civic Society Objects to 10 Centre Planning Application

Submitted on 23 August 2016

The Civic Society has objected to the proposal to the alteration to existing shopfront to relocate the entrance door from the side to the middle. (16/P/1624/F)

Much effort and co-operation amongst the owners has been expended in brightening up The Centre and in doing so reinforcing its Art Deco origins. The original design comprises of recessed entrances to the residential above and splayed entrances to the retail units below. The shops have their original, uninterrupted, large plate glass windows fronting the street, with stall risers below, and it is this that gives the building its character and visual clarity. The splayed entrances are further enhanced by the typical Art Deco design of the floors.

The proposal to introduce an opening directly onto the street undermines the building’s original design intent and current architectural status and as such would set a very unwelcome precedent.
